
It started the administrative iter of the new Portuale Town development plan of Augusta destined to replace that in vigor dating back to 1968 and since then never changed except some adjustments. The Authority of Harbour System of Eastern Sicily has explained that the new PRP completely reorganizes the areas strengthening by far the commercial part thanks to the forecast of new spaces and docks, in adiacenza to those already existing. Moreover, it revolutionizes the shipbuilding part, imagining in the area of Punta Pugno a new shipbuilding pole, important in order to concentrate the activities that have recorded for years an increment and that at the moment have several places in the rada of Augusta and that will be upgraded also with the offshore wind and the naval demolitions. The AdSP has specified that the new Plan then confirms the areas of petrochemical, with future reading keys and addressed to the green, previews zones to sea where to realize renewable energies in water, modern and innovative and, where possible to clearly of the military areas, lightens the urban area, then the coast of the island of Augusta, from all the current harbour functions.
"After 58 years - the president of the Sicilian harbour agency has commented, Francesco Di Sarcina - we bring home a fundamental result that will mark the development of the port of Augsburg for the next decades. The previous PRP was even more dated than the Catalan one. Now are already started the requests of opinion for Ministry, Region and Municipality and the procedure VAS. We will deliver to future governance a bureaucratic path already started, built to contain the times of approval".
"It is - Di Sarcina has added - of long-term project, therefore very gradual according to the realization of the works and the concessions that will be released, keeping well in mind not only the safeguard of every operator that produces, works and guarantees occupation but trying to strengthen all the realities. A strong attention is paid to environmental aspects because the new infrastructures have been designed using the most natural resources, for areas and squares we will avoid taking cave material and use dredging. We have finally abandoned the idea of building squares in the saline area, which instead will be redeveloped with a project already in progress. The logic is the balance between the infrastructure needs and the protection of the environment, already compromised in the past in some areas. We also confirm the general strategy of concentrating mainly ferries and cruises in Catania, while bulking, shipbuilding and containers in Augusta, even if it remains the forecast of having a small space for ferries".
The AdSP has specified that, meanwhile, work and propedeutic yards also continue to the PRP: some state-of-the-art practices have been defined, including the shift of the EST container terminal to part of the new trapezoidal platform, so as to allow the start of the construction work of the railway line by RFI and in view of the future construction work of the square in front of the 7-8 counters with the aim of welcoming large cranes, necessary to assemble the offshore wind turbines.
