La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT) has signed contracts with a Chinese builder to acquire four ship-to-shore cranes and 18 yard equipment - including RTG and RMG cranes - for an investment of 90 million euros. The Contship Group Company Italy has issued orders in view of the start of work for the construction of the new Ravano Terminal and as part of a which provides for total investments of 350 million euros intended for the updating of equipment, the enhancement of infrastructure and increase operational capacity overall of LSCT in the port of La Spezia ( of 29 July 2022 and 14 December 2023).

The terminal operator highlighted that the four new cranes ship-to-shore will allow container ships to be processed Latest generation up to 24,000 TEUs, with the expected configuration which will allow three ships of large dimensions by expanding the service capacity on main international routes. Quay cranes will be prepared for the integration of technological systems, including solutions envisaged include the automatic identification of container through OCR (Optical Character Recognition), the Digital detection of the position of trucks during the loading and unloading and scanning of the ship's profile.

The new yard vehicles will also have a cabinless configuration, i.e. without a driver's cab board, and will be set up for remote control. Two of the cranes RMG will be allocated to the railway fleet that will be carried out as part of the Ravano project and which will include five bundles of tracks. The intervention aims to consolidate the integration between terminal activities and the railway component developed by Contship. With this set-up, LSCT plans to bring its share of traffic intermodal from the current average of 33% to 50%, with one container on two moved by train.

All port vehicles ordered will be powered by energy and, in particular, the first RTGs will be introduced electrical systems of the terminal.
