Thanks to an agreement with the Danish shipping company
Maersk Line, the wind propulsion systems developed by the
British Anemoi Marine Technologies Ltd. will also apply
to the container ship segment. The Rotor Sail System
of the London-based company, in fact, will be installed on a
8,700 container ship of the "Maersk Lima" class with
the objective of increasing the energy efficiency of the ship and
reduce its emissions. The installation of the rotating sail, which
it will have a diameter of five meters and will be 35 meters high,
is scheduled for the middle of next year.
Rotating sails are a wind propulsion technology that
uses aerodynamic lift to generate additional thrust,
helping to reduce fuel consumption and related
emissions under proper operating conditions. Anemoi, which is
Founded in 2015, it has so far installed its own system
Rotor Sail on different types of ships, mainly including
bulk carrier. The company points out that each Rotor system
Sail allows a saving of about one ton of fuel per
day and about three tons of CO2 emissions.
