
The U.S. port of Charleston and the British port of Charleston
Felixstowe, together with the classification society
Lloyd's Register and the Danish shipping group A.P.
Møller - Mærsk, will launch a study to evaluate the
operational and security requirements to activate a service
between the United Kingdom and the United States made with
the use of nuclear-powered container ships. The
project, called "Pink Corridor", will focus on
on the safety and safeguard considerations necessary for
define future regulation and support secure adoption,
protected and responsible for nuclear energy for transport
maritime trade transatlantic as well as access to
to port areas.
The project also aims to be a contribution to the development of the
maritime sector under the Technology Prosperity Deal, the
memorandum of understanding signed last year by the United States and the
United Kingdom, which envisages, among other things, the exploration of
civil nuclear applications in the maritime domain, including
potential creation of a maritime transport corridor between the
two countries.
The results of the initial phase of the Pink Corridor project
will provide guidance for a potential second phase, which
will include areas that require further study within the
regulatory, legislative, safety and safeguard frameworks
for nuclear-powered merchant ships.
