On 2 September, on the occasion of the trade fair for the
SMM Maritime Exhibition held from 1 to 4 September in Hamburg, the
Norwegian company Nor Cruises has signed a memorandum of understanding with
the Chinese shipyard Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co. (SWS)
and China Shipbuilding Trading Co. (CSTC), a
commercial of the China State Shipbuilding shipbuilding group
Corporation (CSSC) which controls SWS, which provides for the construction of
of two cruise ships of 84,000 gross tonnage with
options up to three additional ships.
Nor Cruises was formed in early 2023 with the
purpose of operating in the cruise sector and the MoU signed with SWS
and CSTC, if transformed into binding contracts, would represent the
first step to equip the small Norwegian company with a
fleet and, by transforming options into additional
contracts, the largest contract for cruise ships
issued by foreign shipowners to a shipyard
Chinese.
