Hanwha Defense USA today announced the acquisition of a controlling stake in Hanwha Philly Shipyard, the Philadelphia shipyard detected by the South Korean group Hanwha in December 2024. The operation will lead the factory under the direction and structure of government of the U.S. defense company, strengthening coordination between shipbuilding activities for commercial customers and those aimed at the US Navy and other US federal agencies.
The reorganization previews the transfer of the 60% stake held through Hanwha Systems to the company Hanwha Defense USA Shipbuilding LLC, joint venture led by Hanwha Defense USA with Hanwha FutureProof. Hanwha Ocean, the company of the group specializing in shipbuilding and maritime activities, will maintain the remaining 40%. The conclusion of the operation is scheduled for 31 October.
The U.S. shipbuilding activities will be coordinated by Tom Anderson, retired admiral of the US Navy and president of the U.S. Shipbuilding division of Hanwha Defense USA. The stated objective is to progressively transform that of Philadelphia into a dual-use yard, capable of constructing both commercial ships and military units.
Hanwha announced the acquisition of Philly Shipyard in June 2024, completing it in December of the same year for about $100 million. The transaction was jointly realized by Hanwha Systems and Hanwha Ocean, who had assumed 60% and 40% of the capital respectively. The shipyard, located in the harbour area of Philadelphia, has a consolidated experience in the construction of oceanic merchant ships and units for public programs. The development project of the plant was strengthened in August last year, when Hanwha announced a $5 billion plan for Philadelphia infrastructure. The investment had been presented as part of the South Korean commitment to support American shipbuilding.
Hanwha's initiative is part of the US shipbuilding revival program promoted by President Donald Trump. On 9 April 2025 the White House issued the executive order 14269, "Restoring America's Maritime Dominance", which indicates among the priority objectives the reconstruction of the marine industrial base, the strengthening of the labor force and the increase of the competitiveness of the ships built in the United States.
