Newbuilding orders may have peaked despite very low prices

SOME hefty contracts feature in this week's newbuildings list. Two VLCCs for independent owners reflect, at a reported US$77 million (S$134.75 million) apiece, the very low US dollar prices the South Korean yards are able to offer these days. Nobody, despite the occasional rumour of ULCC projects, builds tankers much over 300,000 dwt.
