DOWN 5.8 YEN TRILLION IN FIRST HALF
Japan's global merchandise trade surplus shrank to 5.829 trillion yen in the first half of fiscal 2000, down 8 percent from a year before as soaring crude oil prices increased the value of imports, the Finance Ministry said Thursday.
The figure was down for three half-year periods in a row, the ministry said in a preliminary report.
