MUMBAI, SEPT 28: Cargo handling costs at Indian ports have been on an upswing with the only exception being JNPT. According to the data provided by Indian Port Association, per tonne handling cost at JNPT had dropped from Rs 168.25 per tonne in 1995-96 to Rs 98.99 per tonne in 2001-02. As against this, the average handling cost considering all the major ports in India has gone up from Rs 63.36 per tonne to Rs 95.14 per tonne in 2001-02.
The decline in handling costs at JNPT over the six year period suggests the benefits derived from the economies of scale with larger vessels calling at the port when compared with other Indian ports, an SCI official said
