Hong Kong needs to build a new container terminal, preferably on the northwest of Lantau Island, by 2015 and cut port fees to remain competitive against the fast growing Shenzhen port, a government-commissioned study has proposed.
The "Hong Kong Port - Master Plan 2020", drawn up by a group of private consultants led by GHK (Hong Kong), forecasts that the city's container traffic will expand from 23.4 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) in 2005 to 27.9 million in 2010 and 40.2 million in 2020
