STX France, a subsidiary of marine mechanics STX Europe, won a contract for the construction of two helicopter carrier class "Mistral" issued by the French group DCNS, which specializes in the construction of naval defense systems, and the Russian Rosoboronexport, the state agency for import and export of defense products.
The two ships of 22,000 tons displacement, 199 meters long and the speed of over 18 knots, will be built in the shipyard of Saint-Nazaire under a subcontract with DCNS. The Russian naval mechanical OSK Group will provide the hulls of both the helicopter carrier.
The first ship will be delivered to Russia in 2014 and the second will be delivered in 2015.
STX France and DCNS have so far built three Mistral class helicopter carrier for the French Navy: the first two, the Mistral and Tonnerre, were completed in 2006 and 2007, while the third, Dixmude, is currently under construction and will be delivered this year.
