The South African group Transnet SOC has signed an agreement with China's Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co. (ZPMC) to acquire seven new ship-to-shore cranes manufactured by the Chinese that of the Port of Durban during the financial year 2012-13, ending March 31, 2013. The new lifting cranes currently in service will replace South Africa in the terminal.
The new cranes, which will have a lifting capacity of 80 tons, will be able to simultaneously handle two 40 'containers or four 20' containers.
Transnet has recently acquired 28 new straddle carriers, 14 of which are equipped with twin-lift mode to lift two containers simultaneously. These acquisitions are part of the lifting of a South African group's investment in port terminals valued at 110.6 billion rand (15.6 billion dollars) over the next five years.
