The European Investment Bank (EIB) has granted the Port Authority of Cadiz a loan of 60 million euros to finance the construction of the new container terminal in the Spanish port ( of 31 December 2010 and 26 July 2011).
The loan will help finance the first phase of the project, which includes the construction of a road inside the port to access the terminal. The total project includes the construction of approximately 590 linear meters of quays with depths of the depth of -16 meters, the construction of a platform of 22 hectares of terminal, dredging the access channel and basin evolution and the construction of a road access to two lanes of length of 1.3 km, including 900 meter tunnel.According to the forecast, work will start later this year and will be completed in 2015.
The project is also financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and European funds will contribute to cover a total of about 87% of the total cost of the works amounting to 137.7 million euros.
The new terminal will replace the existing container terminal at the port of Cadiz, which is located near the passenger terminal and the city center.
