Inaugurated the new port multipurpose of Doraleh (Djibouti)



Wednesday the President of the Republic of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh, has officially inaugurated the new port multipurpose of Doraleh, port of call - it has emphasized - that constitutes "an ulterior step towards the widening and the diversification of the harbour offer and the logistic platform of Djibouti. This new port - it has added - will increase remarkablly not only our ability, but also the possibility of dealing different types of ships and goods. The inauguration of the Doraleh Multipurpose Port, feather in the cap of our harbour infrastructures, evidences the engagement of our Country regarding its natural logistic vocation of hub and of the transports".

The new harbour port of call is extended on 690 hectares and, with a backdrop of the depth of -15 meters, are able to receive ships of the gross capacity of 100 thousand tons. The 15 docks of the port have an ability to traffic of the container pairs to 220 thousand teu and to per year 8,2 million not containerized tons of goods (last year the port of Djibouti have enlivened 987,189 teu and a containerized trade of beyond 6,5 million tons).

The container terminal of Doraleh has become operating at the beginning of 2009 and is managed by DP World of Dubay that in 2000 has constituted joint venture with the government of Djibouti in order to manage the harbour port of call of Djibouti ( on May 9, 2000 and 9 February 2009). The Doraleh Container Terminal (DCT) is participated to 33.33% from DP World; however the agreement with the government of Djibouti previews that the group of Dubay has the control on the investments and the operating activities of the terminal.

The investment for the construction of the port of Doraleh is piled to 590 million dollars and is financed jointly by Autorité DES Ports ET DES Zones franches de Djibouti (DPFZA) and by China Merchant Holding (SCHL). The installed means of raising in the new port are supplied by Chinese ZPMC.

The general manager of the Port de Djibouti, Saad Omar Guelleh, remembering that until from its creation in the 1888 port of Djibouti he has lived great changes and developments having become a catalyst for the development of the territory and the main commercial outlet for Ethiopia, has evidenced that the new port of Doraleh, situated in strategic position between the southern extremity of the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa, is an important pillar in the development of Djibouti so that becomes "the Singapore of Africa Orientale".
