If in 2024 containerized transit traffic gave a
decisive contribution to the growth of this type of cargo in the
ports of Barcelona and Valencia, this was not the case for
the other major Spanish container port of Algeciras which has
ended the year with container traffic of 4,709,450
TEU, with a decrease of -0.5% on 2023. Last year I made a stopover
port of the Bay of Gibraltar, in fact, has indeed registered
a growth in transhipment traffic, which however has
was more sustained for containers in transit in the
which amounted to 658,653 TEUs (+9.2%), while the
containers in international transit have increased by
+1.8% having been equal to 3,412,745 TEUs. If the ports of Barcelona and
Valencia do not disclose the share of transhipments at the national level
and international, in any case the total transhipment traffic
handled in 2024 by Algeciras, amounting to 4,071,398 TEUs, marked
only a slight increase of +2.9% on the previous year, which was not
to compensate for the reductions in import containers and
export results of 329,048 TEUs respectively
(-16.4%) and 309,004 TEUs (-19.4%).
In terms of weight, the containerized traffic handled
last year from the port of Algeciras stood at 56.19
million tons, with a decrease of -0.8% on 2023. Slightly
total freight traffic also decreased
with 104.10 million tonnes (-0.7%): in addition to cargoes in
containers, in fact, the conventional goods that have
totaled 11.92 million tons (-12.5%) and also bulk cargo
solid with 239 thousand tons (-46.6%), reductions that were not
fully offset by the +8.6% increase in liquid bulk cargo
rose to 28.82 million tons.
The decrease in containerized traffic continued
in January 2025, the month in which this type of cargo in the port of
Algeciras amounted to 356,014 TEUs, with a decrease of
-4.3% on January 2024, of which 250,926 TEUs in transit
international (-7.8%), 56,349 TEUs in national transit (+31.7%),
25,646 TEUs imported (-19.1%) and 23,094 TEUs exported
(-9,5%).
In January 2025 container traffic in the port of Valencia
amounted to 408,441 TEUs (+5.5%), with a sharp drop
(-12.7%) of those in transit.
