In the first nine months of 2024, with 362.0 million tonnes handled, the traffic of goods in Italian ports is grew by +0.5% over the same period of the previous year. It has announced today the Association of Italian Ports (Assoporti) in presentation of the research carried out together with SRM, the study center connected to the Intesa Sanpaolo group, focused on on national ports and on trade with States United.

In particular, in the period January-September last year Italian ports handled 128.3 million tons of liquid bulk (+2.4%), 93.1 million tonnes of rolling stock (+1.0%), 91.1 million tons of containerized goods (+4.7%), 36.3 million tonnes of dry bulk (-11.5%) and 13.1 million tonnes of tons of other goods (-9.7%). In addition, in the period, the passenger traffic in national ports is total of 60.0 million people (+4.1%), of which 32.1 million passengers on local maritime services (+3.3%), 16.9 million ferry passengers (+2.9%) and 11.0 million cruise passengers (+7.2%).

The report by SRM and Assoporti shows that 53% of the trade relations between Italy and the USA takes place by sea and which in the first nine months of 2024, Italy-US maritime trade recorded a value of 35.8 billion euros, of which 27.7 billion of Italian exports, with respect to which the United States is the first "customer", and 8.2 billion in imports. In the first five categories of goods exported by sea from Italy to the USA are made up of mechanical appliances (9.4 billion), food and drink (5.5 billion), transport (4.3 billion), chemicals (2.7 billion) and metals (1.9 billion), while the first five categories of imported goods are represented by oil & gas products (3.7 billion), chemicals (0.9 billion), agriculture, hunting and fishing (0.7 billion) billion), mechanical appliances (0.7 billion) and raw materials secondary and waste (0.4 billion).

Among the first Italian ports with the highest volume of traffic with the USA include the ports of Trieste (1.61 million tons in the first nine months of 2024), Livorno (1.01 million tons tons), Piombino (931 thousand tons), Augusta (896 thousand), Genoa (825 thousand), Taranto (754 thousand), Savona (612 thousand), Ravenna (527 thousand), Porto Foxi (418 thousand) and Milazzo (360 thousand).
