Today in Genoa the entry into operation was inaugurated
of the elevated road on the new Ponte del Papa that extends the Strada
of the Superba at high altitude, connecting it to the new elevated road
port area. The new infrastructural configuration, which puts
arrangement of four lanes, two in each direction, on the
and two level lanes, designed to
be expanded in case of operational needs, includes
also the activation of the new western port gate at high altitude,
made in temporary configuration awaiting completion
of the new definitive passage on the right bank of the stream
Polcevera.
The new connection makes it possible to intercept heavy vehicles
coming from the Genoa Airport motorway exit and
direct them directly within the port area, reducing
traffic interference significantly
logistics-port and urban circulation.
Activating the new link is inserted within
a broader road reorganization program
worth about 175.6 million euros which involves
the entire port basin of Sampierdarena. The new axis
infrastructure is in fact one of the pieces that are
redesigning the total six kilometers of the main road
access route to the port terminals, from the west of the city
up to the historic quays of Bettolo and Sanità, through the
strategic junction of San Benigno connected with the motorway exit
of West Genoa. A subsequent stage is scheduled for June 15
with the completion of the connection between the new road network
at high altitude and the San Benigno passage through the ramp built by
Autostrade per l'Italia in the tunnel works
subport. By the end of the month it will also be completed
the demolition of the old Ponte del Papa, which has been maintained until now in
operation as a construction site bridge to allow the construction of
of new infrastructures and will leave room for a
Safer configuration also from a hydraulic point of view
at the mouth of the Polcevera stream.
The new link represents an intermediate phase of a
project set to be completed by the end of 2026 with the
connection between the Strada della Superba at high altitude and the new
port elevated road. Once completed, the system will be
a high-capacity route between the right bank of the
Polcevera and the San Benigno passage, creating a direct connection
between the port terminals and the main motorway junctions of Genoa
West and Genoa Airport. The goal is to build a system
capable of supporting the increase in traffic expected in the
coming years thanks to the new breakwater and the reconfiguration of the
of the commercial port docks, while ensuring a
greater separation between heavy and urban traffic and a
Better integration with last-mile enhancement
railway.
"The activation of these first three kilometers of the new
port elevated - underlined the President of the Authority
by Port System of the Western Ligurian Sea, Matteo Paroli -
represents a strategic step for Genoa and its system
logistics. The work was anticipated with respect to the
completion to respond immediately to critical issues
traffic in periods of greater intensity and today allows
about 900-1,000 heavy goods vehicles per day to access directly
to the operational areas of the port, without crossing the road network
with concrete benefits for the city and for the efficiency of the city
of the airport. This is an intervention carried out quickly,
for an infrastructure at height, and with engineering solutions
in a complex operational context such as the port,
where activities can never stop. The work
also introduces a first benefit for road transport with the
creation of about 70 new temporary parking stalls on the
existing elevated road, near the San Benigno gate, first step
towards the construction of a new car park, which will be able to
be developed thanks to the synergy of institutions and operators
with a virtuous public-private partnership. The new
infrastructure is equipped with photovoltaic systems financed by
with PNRR funds and has made it possible to overcome a historic critical issue
represented by the old crossing over the Polcevera".
