Today in the Ancona shipyard of Fincantieri
The launching ceremony of
Viking Astrea, the new ship, took place
cruising yacht under construction for the shipping company Viking.
With a gross tonnage of about 54,300 tons, a length of
239 meters and a capacity to accommodate up to 998 passengers in
499 cabins, the new ship will be equipped with a
propulsion based in part on the use of liquid hydrogen and
fuel cells. The project was developed with a
particular attention to environmental aspects and will allow
the ship to operate with zero emissions, making it possible to access
even to marine areas that are particularly sensitive from the point of view of
environmental policy.
Meanwhile, the board of directors of Viking Holdings,
the parent company that holds the entire capital of Viking Cruises, has
authorised a share buyback programme up to one
worth one billion dollars. The resolution of the
Buyback comes at a time of declining stock value
of the American cruise group, with shares that have gone from
a recent peak of about 100 dollars last August 5 to about
$84 at yesterday's close. The president and director
delegate of the US company, Leah Talactac, highlighted
that 'the authorisation for the repurchase of shares reflects the
confidence in Viking's long-term prospects, its
strong financial position and the ability to continue to
generate significant cash flows. This authorisation -
added - offers flexibility in returning capital to
shareholders, while allowing us to continue to invest
in our fleet, guest experience and
opportunities for future growth".
Although the commitment to actually spend has not been decided
the full amount deliberated, if Viking used the entire billion
of dollars at the current average price of $84 could
Purchase approximately 11.9 million shares, or only approximately 2.7%
of the current shareholder base.
