A new 13,000-euro container ship has been delivered to France's CMA CGM
TEU, which is defined as the first in the world not to require the
container lashing and unlashing operations. The ship,
in fact, it has been equipped with "Lashing-Free" technology
by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries eliminating the need
the intervention of operators for manual fixing and unlocking
containers. The new technology has not been applied
on all the loading spaces of the containers of the
ship.
On ships, containers in the holds are normally placed
in the cell guides, vertical steel guides, while on the bridge the
containers are fixed to those below by means of twistlocks. The
Conventional cargo hold covers prevent the Guides cells from
reach the area above the bridge and, to overcome this obstruction,
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has designed a mobile platform
that can be installed between the vertical guides that has the
dimensions of a 40-foot container, allowing it to be
handling by means of the same port cranes used for the
loading and unloading of containers. In addition, the South Korean company has
developed a "Twistlock Rooting System" that fixes to the
structure of the ship containers stowed outside the area of the
cell guides.
HD Hyundai highlighted that the Lashing-Free system allows
to carry more than 10% more load on deck
compared to conventional ships of the same type, and guarantees
Stable container support even in sea conditions
rough and strong winds, helping to prevent the loss of
cargo operations, improve maritime safety and reduce the risk of
marine pollution. In addition, HD Hyundai pointed out that the
sea trials carried out in September also showed high levels of
lower vibration rates than ships equipped with lower vibration systems
with hatch covers and lashing bridges.
