
The Government of Bangladesh today announced measures to
increase the international competitiveness of the sector
shipbuilding, and in particular that of recycling
through the streamlining of authorization procedures
and approval of practices and removal of obstacles
institutional activities. To boost recycling activities
naval will also be the construction of a plant for the
treatment, storage and disposal of waste deriving from
from the dismantling of ships with which it is planned to eliminate the
barriers, including regulatory barriers, which discourage
European ship operators to turn to Bangladeshi shipyards for the
their recycling.
In addition, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Khandakar
Abdul Muktadir, said that Bangladesh will give
priority to the implementation of the Hong Kong Convention for the
safe and sustainable recycling of ships, to which Bangladesh has
joined in 2023 and entered into force on 26 June 2025,
with the aim of transforming the ship recycling sector into a
An environmentally friendly and standards-compliant industry
international associations. To this end, the Minister also envisaged
the possibility of introducing a specific certification
national team.
There are also initiatives to remove the difficulties
of financing to companies in the sector.
