Lo Japan Ship Centre (JETRO) ha comunicato i consuntivi delle commesse acquisite dai cantieri navali giapponesi resi noti dalla Japan Ship Exporters' Association (JSEA) e dal ministero dei Trasporti (MOT) del Giappone. La Japan Ship Exporters' Association - riferendosi strettamente alle unità in esportazione a differenza di quanto ha reso noto il ministero che tiene conto delle navi destinate al mercato nazionale ed estero - ha annunciato che i cantieri navali nazionali nel mese d'aprile hanno ricevuto da armatori esteri ordinazioni per la costruzione di otto navi (sei bulk carrier e due petroliere) per un totale di 451.400 tonnellate di stazza lorda, con un calo del 40,1 per cento rispetto all'aprile del 1998. In marzo invece vi era stato un incremento del 3,5 per cento con l'ordinazione di una nave per un armatore nazionale e 22 per committenti esteri: alla consegna 3 verranno pagate in dollari, 2 in dollari e in yen e 18 in yen. 17 di queste navi verranno consegnate ai committenti prima dell'aprile del 2000 e 6 prima dell'aprile del 2001.
L'associazione degli esportatori giapponesi di navi JSEA ha annunciato che nel periodo aprile 1998 - marzo 1999 sono state commissionate per l'export 129 navi per 6.468.921 tsl e 227 per 7.743.844 tsl consegnate nello stesso periodo di tempo ai committenti stranieri.
Tra l'aprile 1998 e il marzo 1999 il ministero giapponese dei Trasporti ha autorizzato la costruzione di 283 navi per 10.581.781 tonnellate di stazza lorda, di cui 14 per 233.765 tsl per armatori nazionali e 269 per 10.348.016 tsl per conto di armatori esteri.
