Il porto di Long Beach nell'anno fiscale ottobre 1999 - settembre 2000 ha movimentato 4.564.429 teu, con un incremento del 6,1% sull'anno fiscale precedente. Le esportazioni sono cresciute del 7,4%, ottenendo il risultato migliore degli ultimi cinque anni, mentre le importazioni sono aumentate del 7,5%. Il numero dei container vuoti, in gran parte tornati in Asia per essere caricati, è salito del 2,1.
Nell'anno fiscale 1999-2000 il traffico container ha mostrato notevoli oscillazioni: mentre nello scorso agosto è stato ad esempio rilevato un nuovo record, nel successivo settembre la movimentazione è stata di 387.593 teu, con un calo del 3,8% sul settembre 1999 determinato sia dalla diminuzione delle importazioni che delle esportazioni che sono state pari rispettivamente a 208.880 teu pieni (-4,7%) e a 80.875 teu pieni (-1,7%). «Non è inusuale che i nostri risultati oscillino» ha confermato l'amministratore delegato dei servizi marittimi del porto statunitense Don Wylie, ricordando comunque che i dati annuali sono confortanti e che i traffici continuano a crescere.
Se in settembre Long Beach ha registrato una flessione del traffico container in importazione, il porto di Los Angeles ha invece mostrato un incremento del 22%, facendo così segnare un aumento complessivo del 7,4% delle importazioni containerizzate del sistema portuale formato dai due vicini scali californiani.
