- Il porto di Singapore ha chiuso il 2008 con volumi di traffico record registrando un sensibile aumento dell'attività rispetto all'anno precedente. Tuttavia i dati della fine dello scorso anno indicano che, come la quasi totalità dei porti mondiali, lo scalo ha iniziato ad avvertire in maniera accentuata gli effetti della recesssione economica mondiale.

- Nel 2008 il porto di Singapore ha movimentato complessivamente un traffico record di 515,3 milioni di tonnellate di merci, con una crescita del 6,5% rispetto all'anno precedente. Nel settore dei container il traffico è stato pari a 29.918.200 teu, in aumento del 7,1% rispetto al 2007, un dato che conferma Singapore al primo posto nella graduatoria dei porti container mondiali. Nel 2008 i terminal del porto operati dal gruppo PSA hanno movimentato complessivamente 29,0 milioni di teu, con una crescita del 7,0 rispetto a 27,1 milioni di teu nel 2007.

- Inoltre lo scorso anno il porto di Singapore ha totalizzato un nuovo record del tonnellaggio di stazza lorda delle navi arrivate in porto con complessive 1,6 miliardi di tonnellate (+11,1%), di cui il 36,5% è costituito da navi portacontainer e il 29,9% da navi cisterna. Record anche per le vendite di bunker, che sono ammontate a 34,9 milionoi di tonnellate (+10,7%) e per la consistenza della flotta immatricolata nel registro navale di Singapore, che alla fine del 2008 ha raggiunto 43,7 milioni di tonnellate di stazza lorda (+10,4%).

- Lo scorso mese di dicembre il traffico complessivo delle merci è stato di 35,1 milioni di tonnellate, con una riduzione del 18,4% rispetto al dicembre 2007. Si tratta di una decisa contrazione che segue un rallentamento dell'attività registrato già nei precedenti mesi di novembre ed ottobre (rispettivamente +0,7% e -2,5%), che a loro volta erano erano stati preceduti da 32 mesi consecutivi di aumento del traffico. Lo scorso dicembre il traffico dei container è diminuito del 13,1% rispetto al dicembre 2007.
