Last year the port of Zeebrugge handled 47.0 million tonnes of cargo, an increase of 3.0% percent on 2019 that was the result of the significant 34.3% percent increase in traffic recorded in the first quarter of 2020, followed by decreases of -4.4%, -10.4% and -6.4% respectively in the three subsequent quarterly periods. A rise in all four quarters of 2020 was the volumes of container traffic and, contrary to what happened in large parts of European ports, of solid bulk carriers. Last year containerized traffic amounted to a total of almost 18.0 million tonnes (+ 10.3%), with a container handling that amounted to 1.8 million teu (+ 5.9%). The traffic in solid bulk, mainly due to the series of infrastructure works being carried out in the Belgian port region, increased by 29.0% percent to 1.7 million tonnes. In addition, the traffic in liquid bulk bulk in 2020 was 12.6 million tonnes (+ 16.4%). On the other hand, the rotables, which, with 14.2 million tonnes, fell by -14.2%.
