Si svolgerà dal 6 al 9 ottobre a Nicosia (Cipro) la conferenza internazionale "Maritime Cyprus 1997". Alla manifestazione - che ha cadenza biennale - sono attesi oltre mille rappresentanti di tutti i rami dell'industria marittima (armatori, brokers, amministratori, ecc.), riuniti per discutere sugli scenari futuri del mondo dello shipping. Il titolo assegnato a questo incontro è infatti "A New Era in Shipping".
Tra i nomi dei relatori spiccano quelli del segretario generale dell'International Maritime Organization (IMO), William O'Neil, del presidente del Baltic Exchange, Eric Shawyer, del segretario generale dell'International Chamber of Shipping / International Shipping Federation, Chris Horrocks, del segretario generale dell'International Transport Workers Federation, David Cockroft.
Il tema è vasto e gli argomenti affrontati saranno numerosi: dalla sicurezza in mare alla prevenzione della polluzione marina, dall'evoluzione dei diversi vettori del trasporto marittimo alla situazione dei porti europei - tratteggiata dal direttore generale della Port Authority di Londra David Jeffery -, dagli aspetti legislativi a quelli sociali che governano la vita marittima.
Presidente del comitato organizzativo della conferenza è Vasso Pyrgos, segretario permanente del ministero cipriota delle Comunicazioni e del Lavoro.
"Maritime Cyprus 1997" sarà anticipata, domenica 5 ottobre, da un ricevimento al palazzo presidenziale di Nicosia a cui parteciperà il presidente della repubblica di Cipro Glafkos Clerides.
L'ultimo giorno del convegno, giovedì 9 ottobre, verrà riservato ad un workshop che avrà per temi l'International Safety Management Code (ISM Code) dell'IMO e le modifiche del 1995 alla convenzione dello Standard of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW), approvata nel 1978 ed entrata in vigore il 1° febbraio scorso; emendamenti che hanno mutato completamente la versione originaria ratificata dalle 120 nazioni che, insieme, rappresentano il 95 per cento della flotta mercantile mondiale. Gli stessi argomenti sono stati affrontati anche al simposio internazionale "Una sfida per il mondo marittimo: integrare la nave e l'uomo" promosso dal Registro Italiano Navale (RINA) e tenutosi a Genova il 19 giugno scorso.
