 Nel 2002 il costruttore navale giapponese Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) ha completato la costruzione di 13 navi per un totale di 751.961 tonnellate di stazza lorda, contro 13 navi per un totale di 578.965 tonnellate di stazza lorda nel 2001. Lo scorso anno il gruppo giapponese ha inoltre varato 16 navi per un totale di 872.981 tsl, contro 13 navi per 634.310 tsl nel 2001.
