Last month, the Suez Canal was crossed by 1,476 vessels, a decrease of 5.0% compared to 1554 vessels in July 2010. The tankers were 282 (-6.6%) and other types of ships 1194 (-4.6%). The volume of cargo carried by ships in transit amounted to 58.8 million tons (+5.8%), of which 27.5 million tonnes transported in a north-south (+6.1%) and 31 3 million tons in the south-north direction (+5.6%).
In the first seven months of 2011 the canal was crossed Egypt a total of 10,184 ships, with a decline of 0.2% compared to 10,205 ships in the period from January to July of last year. The tankers were 1990 (-0.2%) and other types of ships 8194 (-0.2%), including 4,217 container (+9.2%), 1,283 bulk carriers (-18.9%), 820 multipurpose (-12.3%), 661 LNG carriers (+46.6%), 581-door cars (-0.5%), 153 ro-ro (-1.9%), 54 passenger ships (-12.9 %), 8 mixed carriers (-61.9%) and 417 other vessels (-21.5%).
In the period from January to July this year the volume of cargo carried by ships in transit amounted to 393.2 million tonnes (+6.6%), of which 187.3 million tons in the north-south direction ( +1.7%) and 205.9 million tons in the south-north direction (+11.5%). The volume of oil and petroleum products transported by ships amounted to 58.4 million tons (+1.8%) and that of other goods totaled 334.8 million tons (+7.5%) including 229 , 3 million tons of containerized cargo (+8.6%).
