South Korean HMM will order seven portacontainer from 23.000 teu to DSME, five from 23.000 teu to SHI and eight from 14.000 teu to HHI



The company of South Korean navigation Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) has announced today to have concluded the under way negotiations in the past weeks for the selection of the navalmeccaniche companies compatriots to which entrusting the construction of 20 portacontainer of large-capacity(on 10 April 2018). The company has announced that the letters of attempts for the realization of the ships will be sign shortly with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), to which will be entrusted the construction of seven ships from 23.000 teu, with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), than will realize five from 23.000 teu, and with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), to which the construction of eight portacontenitori from 14.000 teu will be commissioned.

The 12 new ships ordered to the first two companies will be taken in delivery within according to trimester of 2020, while the eight commissioned to the HHI will be introduced in the fleet of the HMM within according to trimester of 2021. The first 12 portacontainer they will be employed on the marine routes between Asia and Europe, while the others eight will be used in the services with the Americas.

The new constructions join in the plan strategic of the HMM in order to equip of a fleet of the ability at least a million teu, quota that is considered necessary in order to realize economies of scale useful in order to compete with the primary companies of navigation of the market of the containerized marine transport. Currently they are the seven world-wide marine carriers that have fleets of the total ability to beyond a million teu: Maersk Line, Mediterranean Shipping Company, CMA CGM, COSCO Shipping, Hapag-Lloyd, ONE and Evergreen. With the first two, Maersk and MSC that have respective fleets of the ability to 4,1 million and 3,3 million teu and that they have signed an agreement of Vessel Sharing called Agreement 2M, Hyundai Merchant Marine has undersigned the strategic agreement of cooperation 2M+H with duration from April 2017 to relative March 2020 and to all the routes East-West. Currently the fleet of the HMM has an ability to beyond 390 thousand teu that, with the taken one in delivery of the 20 new ships, it will go up to about 780 thousand teu.

Announcing the selection of the three yards for the construction of the 20 Hyundai Merchant Marine ships it has found that the prices of the shipbuilding quickly have an increase which had to the recent increase of the prices of the steel, to the strong appreciation of the exchange rates and to the rise of the question of construction of ships.
