Uno studio commissionato dalla Maritime and Port Authority (MPA), dal ministero del Lavoro e dalla Workforce Development Agency (WDA) di Singapore alla NUS Consulting (NUSC) conferma la centralità dell'industria marittima nell'economia nazionale. Il settore dello shipping continuerà a crescere e a garantire posti di lavoro.
Nel breve termine - spiega la ricerca - l'industria marittima di Singapore registrerà un tasso di crescita annuo del 6,5%-9,3% e nel lungo termine - fino al 2018 - il tasso di progressione sarà attestato a 7,0%-8,7%.
Attualmente 116.800 persone sono impiegate nelle circa 3.400 imprese che formano l'industria dello shipping di Singapore. Il 70% degli addetti (78.700 persone, di cui circa il 30% di nazionalità estera) svolge un lavoro a terra, mentre il 30% (38.100 persone, di cui oltre il 90% di nazionalità estera) è imbarcato sulle navi che battono bandiera di Singapore. Il 40% della forza lavoro è assorbito da società di navigazione e da agenzie marittime e di brokeraggio.
Secondo il rapporto, i salari del personale dell'industria marittima, in particolare di quello imbarcato, è assolutamente comparabile con i salari degli impiegati di pari livello di altre industrie. Ad esempio - sottolinea lo studio - il salario medio di un neolaureato al primo impiego ammonta a 1.400 dollari di Singapore (817 dollari).
Non solo l'industria marittima di Singapore garantisce stipendi equi, ma garantirà in futuro nuovi posti di lavoro. È previsto infatti un tasso annuo di crescita del 5,2% dell'occupazione a terra e dell'1,9% di quella a bordo. Nel 2018 l'industria marittima di Singapore darà lavoro ad oltre 200.000 persone. I settori che registreranno i più elevati tassi di crescita dell'occupazione saranno quelli della costruzione e riparazione navale, delle spedizioni, dello ship management e delle attività terminalistiche.
