September 9, 1997
Giant size of container ships, pendulum services, hub ports, heavy presence of new shipping companies in services to the North Atlantic, together with the constant decrease of the freight rates, come to non-profitable prices, have had a destroying effect on the conference which regulates the traffic among the West Mediterranean ports and the American ports of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf, the South Europe American Conference (SEAC), which on September 30, it will wind up with a complete agreement of the eight companies which make it up.
Perhaps the decision shows conflicting interests in the shipping world where big companies compete for a course which is always been the most difficult in the world and, upon which there is no more market stability.
Such reasons, which no more represent a single traffic sector but the scenario of all the shipping world, determined the decision taken by the eight companies, which unfortunately also involves the thirteen employees of the conference secretariat located in Genoa that from October 1 will be unemployed.
In the meantime four of the eight shipping companies, for some days still members of the SEAC, set up a new conference the United States South Europe Conference. They are the Maersk Line, the Sea-Land, the P&O Nedlloyd B.V. and the P&O Nedlloyd Ltd. The new conference takes care of the traffic setcors the SEAC was in charge of, and so far she has not yet establised a secretariat conference.
