For the company terminal operator DP World of Dubai this is an important week as been the opening of two new areas of the terminal group in Central and South America.
On Monday in the port of Buenos Aires, the President of Argentina, Cristina Fernández, has inaugurated the new cruise terminal Qinquela Martín, which was developed by Terminal Rio de La Plata (TRP), a subsidiary of DP World, which is the most largest cruise port in South America.
The terminal Qinquela Martin is able to simultaneously accommodate two ships longer than 300 meters while moving about 2,000 passengers. The work has cost more than 90 million pesos (22 million) and investment in new terminal by TRP is more than $ 25 million.
The new terminal is the complete renovation of the former Terminal Qinquela Martín Benito, which was built in 2001 and had a maximum capacity of 120,000 passengers per year and 8,000 passengers a day. Recently, the cruise traffic in Buenos Aires has been a marked increase: in the 2009-10 season (October-June) were handled 336,369 passengers, while in the 2000-01 season were 80,883 cruise passengers. In the current cruise season are scheduled ports of call of 135 vessels for a total of over 365,000 passengers.
The new terminal Qinquela Martín, whose inauguration was attended by the chairman of DP World, Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, has a building of 12,000 square meters on two floors and has an annual traffic capacity of 600,000 passengers.
Yesterday, also, the President of the Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernández, in the presence of the chairman of DP World, has inaugurated the expansion of the port of Caudeco, a project which is the expansion of multipurpose terminals operated by DP World Caucedo (group DP World) and which involved an investment of over $ 50 million.
The first phase of terminal Dominican, which is 25 km from Santo Domingo, became in December 2003 and has a quay of 622 meters with a depth of -13.5 meters. The second phase, which was inaugurated yesterday, involved the construction of additional quay of 300 meters with a depth of -12.5 meters which will raise the plant capacity by 25%. The second stage was equipped with two mobile cranes and other means of square.
