A wide range of challenges facing both sea-ports and inland ports will be discussed at the forthcoming GreenPort 2009 conference, the 4th international “Ports and the Environment” conference taking place at the Ramada Hotel, Naples, on 25 and 26 February 2009.
As in 2008, the GreenPort conference is being organised in association with the EcoPorts Foundation The main theme of GreenPort 09 will be “Lean and Green: Finding New Answers in a Changing Economic Climate” (download programme in PDF format). Representatives from ports’ environmental, planning, operational and legal departments will be attending the conference, together with regulatory policy-makers and environmental consultants from the industry.
Ports need to expand, if they are to meet the growing demands of shippers and shipping lines. Representatives of both sectors will explain to delegates what they expect from the ports industry. Dr Eng Sergio Barbarino, Head of R&D Global Surface Care at Proctor & Gamble Eurocor, Belgium, will give the Cargo Owner’s view, while Morten Engelstoft, Chief Operating Officer of Maersk Line, will present the Shipping Line’s view point.
Recognising the possible impact of the economic climate on the environmental initiatives being undertaken by ports and terminals, the plenary session on Day 1 of the conference will include presentations from three key organisations - the Port of Los Angeles, the Port of London and DP World - on the subject of how to become “Lean and Green”.
The GreenPort 09 Conference will also comprise three Workshops, covering: “Ports and the Logistics Chain”, “Ports and Operational Tools for Sustainable Management” and “Ports and the City/Community Environment”.
Within the Ports and Logistics Workshop, presentations and discussion will cover subjects such as the development of carbon-neutral supply chains and the extension of a port’s gateway to improve sustainable logistics. Speakers include representatives from Siemens, EFICO Coffee Trading, the European Shippers Council, the Port of Marseille, the Port of Barcelona and Assologistica.
The Operational Tools Workshop will feature a Status Report on the World Port Climate Change Initiative, together with a presentation on the impact of climate change on the ports and shipping sector.
The relationship between ports and the local community will be explored in-depth in the “Ports and the City/Community Environment” Workshop. There will be presentations on best practice examples of port activities close to housing and communities and the development of an environmental for working, living and leisure-time.
Parallel Sessions on the 2nd day of the conference will cover two key topics: Dredging and EcoPorts Tools. The Dredging session will review best management practices for dredging in sensitive environments, together with a review of new EU legislation relating to dredging waste and environmental standards. The EcoPorts session will focus on the development of specific tools by EcoPorts to meet changing requirements. It will review such issues as the certification of sustainable management in ports; cost-reductions and environmental good practice; and self-diagnostics and PERS certification.
The Conference will end with a Plenary Session, in which panellists and delegates will be asked to debate the topic: “Is ‘environment’ dropping down the ports and shipping agenda in a changing economic world”.
The GreenPort 09 conference is hosted by the Port of Naples and, once again, is being supported by the European Sea Ports Organisation and the European Federation of Inland Ports.
Fully integrated with the GreenPort 2009 Conference, leading Suppliers of Port and Terminal Equipment, Technologies, Systems and Solutions have the opportunity to showcase their “green” credentials and promote their latest innovations.
