Lo scorso anno l'industria crocieristica nordamericana ha avuto un impatto di oltre 30 miliardi di dollari sull'economia statunitense, con un incremento superiore al 18% rispetto al 2003. Lo rivela lo studio annuale sul settore crocieristico commissionato al Business Research and Economic Advisors (BREA) dall'International Council of Cruise Lines (ICCL), che sottolinea come il comparto abbia sostenuto circa 316mila posti di lavoro negli Stati Uniti ed oltre 12,4 miliardi di dollari in stipendi.
L'impatto economico diretto è ammontato a 14,7 miliardi di dollari, con un incremento di circa due miliardi di dollari rispetto al 2003 attribuibile principalmente - secondo il BREA - all'incremento degli imbarchi dei passeggeri statunitensi, saliti del 14% a 8,1 milioni di unità, pari al 75% dei 10,85 milioni di imbarchi crocieristici mondiali registrati nel 2004. Tale volume d'affari ha sostenuto 135mila posti di lavoro e consentito di pagare 4,8 miliardi di dollari di salari.
Lo scorso anno la flotta crocieristica nordamericana è aumentata di otto navi, una crescita paragonabile a quella del 2003 in termini di navi, ma non di capacità: le otto navi immesse nel 2004 hanno una capacità pari a circa 25mila letti singoli, con un incremento dell'11,6% rispetto all'anno precedente e superiore all'incremento medio degli ultimi dieci anni, che è stato pari all'8%.
