ECSA, the regional approach EU to the emissions of the shipping favors the extra-EU ports of the Med and those English post-Brexit



The association of the European shipowners has expressed regret for the expressed favorable opinion from the associations of the ports and the shippers of the European Union regarding the approval by the European Parliament of the inclusion of the emissions produced from the shipping in the European system of exchange of emissions ETS, inclusion that will have effect from 2023 if within the 2021 International Maritime Organization (IMO) will not succeed to adopt a system of international valence ( of the 15, 16 and 17 February 2017).

The error of the ports and the shippers is - second the European Community Shipowners' Associations (ECSA) - to support a regional approach to the issue with the attempt to reach the objective of the reduction of the emissions of the ships, while for the European shipowning association this approach has the contrary effect.

"In October last year - the general secretary of the ECSA, Patrick Verhoeven has remembered - the Member States of the IMO have agreed a schedule in order to limit the produced gas emissions greenhouse from the marine transport that is being implemented in two phases in order to put on a final total strategy within 2023. The demand for the Parliament to put on already two years before a system to total level comparable to system ETS of the EU does not hold account of the international engagement that the countries of the IMO, between which all the Member States of the EU, have ratified and it endangers it".

"It is a true sin and it is worrisome - Verhoeven has complained - than our partner of the logistic chain lower a regional approach.
