Election Commission allows Shipping Ministry to revamp Major Port boards

The Election Commission (EC) has permitted the Union Shipping Ministry - overlooking its earlier objections - to reconstitute the board of trustees of eight Major Port Trusts - including those of Mumbai and Chennai, which were due on April 1, 2004, it is learnt.

The EC's latest move follows a second submission by the Shipping Ministry in this regard.

The EC has, however, made it clear that the approval pertained only to the appointment of official trustees and not for the nomination of trustees representing 'other interests', a senior Ministry official clarified ......
