The contracts for developing/operating the third container terminal at Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP) and the box terminal at Cochin Port will, in all probability, be awarded by the end of June, according to senior officials in the Union Ministry of Shipping.
Hopes of a quick finalisation of the respective contracts have brightened following the new Union Minister of Shipping, Mr T. R. Baalu's recent statement in favour of private investment - for developing cargo handling facilities - in the country's ports sector. Though bidding formalities for the two projects were completed well before the recent elections, the contracts could not be awarded earlier because of objections from the Election Commission
