
In 2024, after six years of decline, freight traffic in the
port of Catania has returned to growth despite the reduction
of containerised cargo volumes, which is
transferred to the port of Augusta
(

March 2024). Last year, however, traffic in the latter
port of call, despite the new contribution of goods in
container, fell for the third year in a row.
Overall, in 2024 the port of Catania handled
7.86 million tons of goods, with an increase of +3.7%
on the previous year. In the field of miscellaneous goods,
7.35 million tonnes of rolling stock (+10.8%) were handled and a
residual container traffic which amounted to 139 thousand
tons, down -73.7% on 2023. In addition, the airport
Siciliano handled 369 thousand tons of dry bulk
(-11.9%), including 177 thousand tons of cereals (-1.0%), 164 thousand tons
tons of minerals (-9.2%), 16 thousand tons of feed
(-55.0%), 7 thousand tons of chemicals (-61.2%) and 5 thousand tons of chemicals
tons of other dry bulk cargo (-10.0%).
Last year, the total traffic in the port of Augusta
23.00 million tons (-4.5%). The reduction is
was generated by the decline in liquid bulk cargo, which fell by -7.2%
to 21.38 million tonnes, of which 6.52 million tonnes of
crude oil (-3.6%), 13.37 million tons of products
oil (-9.3%), 933 thousand tons of gas (-6.6%) and 556 thousand tons
tons of chemicals (+3.5%). In the bulk segment
1.21 million tons (+17.6%),
including 817 thousand tons of minerals and building materials
(+36.9%), 236 thousand tons of metallurgical products (+88.9%),
21 thousand tons of coal and 138 thousand tons of other bulk cargo
solid (+55.4%). In 2024 the new containerized traffic
handled by the port amounted to 403 thousand tons and was
has been achieved with a handling of containers equal to over
39 thousand TEUs.
