The Port System Authority of the Ligurian Sea Occidentale, the Intermodality Logistics Association Sustainable (ALIS), Assocostieri, Edison, and FS Logistix have signed today a memorandum of understanding aimed at developing a Pilot project for the production and use of green hydrogen at the port of Savona. With the agreement, the parties undertake to start a collaboration with the aim of analyzing and develop technological solutions aimed at the decarbonisation of logistics, operations and procurement activities in the maritime port sector, becoming part of the transition path promoted by the Port System Authority of the Sea Western Liguria.

The project involves the analysis and definition of a supply chain integrated hydrogen through the identification of potential users and for ground logistics activities (goods handling) and sea transport, as well as the configuration techno-economic optimisation of production plants and distribution of hydrogen, taking into account the authorizations. In this context, it will be explored in depth the use of hydrogen as an alternative energy carrier in the transport of goods by rail, also with reference to the activities of the last mile railway in the port area.

The agreement will last until 31 December 2027. On the based on the results of development and testing activities, and technical, economic and regulatory assessments, the parties evaluate the subsequent phases of implementation of the solutions project identified.

The agreement was signed in Savona, in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Edoardo Rixi, from Matteo Paroli, president of the Port Authority of the Western Ligurian Sea, Fabrizio Mattana, executive vice president Gas Asset Edison, Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of FS Logistix, Antonio Errigo, deputy director of ALIS, and Dario Soria, general manager of Assocostieri.

On the occasion of today's signing, the Chairman of the Authority of the Port System of the Western Ligurian Sea, Matteo Paroli, announced that, for the hydrogen project, Savona has "a port area on which to work and a a path that must lead us from design to experimentation. We will start - he added - from the possible users and the real needs, we will build the solution around these and we will verify costs, authorizations, security and performance. The point of arrival must be testing: understanding the field whether hydrogen can work, with what results and what conditions, in the daily activities of logistics port and maritime sectors. This is how we understand the energy transition: not as a declaration of principle, but as an innovation to be experimented, measured and, when it works, to bring to an industrial scale".
