Today the European Commission has published a new transportation plan with the neighboring nations that, through 20 initiatives, aims to strengthen transport links with the regions to the east and south of the European Union. "Freedom of movement - said EU Commission Vice President Siim Kallas, responsible for transport - it is something that we all tend to take for granted in Europe, but that should not stop at borders. Today, if we really want a relationship with our neighbors, we provide the essential infrastructure for the flow of goods and people across borders and eliminate the bureaucracy and bottlenecks. "
The main elements of the plan are planning to extend to regions near the internal aviation market and the EU Single European Sky, connecting the trans-European transport network with the infrastructure of neighboring countries through priority transport projects, to improve the exploitation the potential for freight transport by opening markets and reducing technical barriers such as differences in track gauge, to streamline the implementation of regional cooperation in setting up an "Expert Group on Transport in the Eastern Partnership" to coordinate Cooperation with neighboring countries in Eastern, to make more efficient maritime transport with neighboring countries, even in the long term, through their inclusion in the "Blue Belt" free movement of shipping in Europe and in the seas around Europe, to contribute to improving road safety in neighboring countries.
The European Commission has stated that these actions will be funded until 2013 with existing resources through better prioritization of projects and measures. The Commission's plan will be submitted to the Council and the European Parliament, then, during the ministerial conference organized by the Polish EU Presidency to be held on 24 and 25 October in Krakow, will be kicked off the work of the new Group of Experts for transport in the Eastern Partnership which will oversee the implementation of measures for the East.
Meanwhile, the European Commission has reiterated its full support to the implementation of the new Lyon-Turin rail link. "After the start of work at the exploratory tunnels of the Magdalene and the meeting of the Franco-Italian intergovernmental conference in Rome on 6 July - said in a statement Brussels - the Commission remains committed to supporting France and Italy in the completion of the axis Lyon-Turin rail. This link missing key trans-European transport network not only connects two of the main European cities and regions, but also a complete main European transport corridor connecting the east-west Iberian Peninsula to Central Europe and contributing to economic growth " .
