Memorandum of Understanding between the Navy and Sparkle for the protection of submarine telecommunications cables
The agreement provides for the development of research activities and shared operating procedures to improve the protection of submarine communication infrastructures
July 12, 2022
Explaining the reasons for the agreement, Sparkle recalled that more than 97% of the amount of data that makes up the internet stream on which our society is based is transmitted thanks to a dense network of submarine cables. Such critical infrastructures enjoy in much of the only protection guaranteed by the depth of the sea in which they lie, protection now evanescent thanks to the technological progress that makes it increasingly accessible, and decreasing costs, the depths of the sea. A Sparkle, which is among the world's leading players in the strategic sector of submarine cables, make part of an articulated set of networks and systems which constitute a critical infrastructure that is fundamental to the regular socio-economic development of the country. At the same time, the Marina Militare is the only institutional subject able to ensure the monitoring and protection of the underwater dimension in to which vital interests for the country insist, such as, in fact, those resident in the so-called communication backbones. Convergence of interests towards the need to ensure a more effective supervision and greater protection of the infrastructures of communication of national interest therefore led to the stipulation of the Memorandum of Understanding.
The agreement was signed yesterday afternoon in Rome, at the Salone dei Marmi of Palazzo Marina, by the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Enrico Credendino, and from the CEO of Sparkle, Elisabetta Romano, to the also attended by the president of Sparkle, Alessandro Pansa.
