    The London Stock Exchange yesterday scrapped its controversial plan to merge with the Frankfurt bourse so it could fight off a hostile bid from the operator of the Stockholm market, OM Gruppen. The London exchange said it would be impossible to go ahead with the merger while fighting off OM Gruppen's offer. However LES chairman Don Cruickshank stressed that the exchange remained committed to cross-border consolidation of European bourses to boost liquidity and bring down transaction costs. He said: "When the OM offer has been seen off, the board - in full consultation with shareholders and customers - will review the means by which London's pre-eminent role in European equities trading can be best promoted in both their interests."
