In an open letter addressed to Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for transport, Siim Kallas, the European Federation of Inland Ports (EFIP), organizations of users and operators of inland waterways and European chambers of commerce along the rivers Elbe and Oder urged the European Commission to re-enter the river Elbe in core network infrastructure of the European transport network TEN-T.
In the letter organizations show that the Elbe is fully embedded into multi-modal corridor Hamburg-Leipzig-Prague as proposed by the European Commission and the development of the Elbe River waterway which is essential to enable the Czech Republic to take advantage of transport by water and have access to the sea.In addition, the letter points out that the development of river transport to and from the Czech Republic is required to meet the growing demand for sustainable transport and modal shift as called for in the White Paper the European Commission can not be satisfied only with rail transport.
The inclusion of the river Elbe - explain organizations - fits perfectly within the logic of the revision of the TEN-T as it allows you to connect better to the east with the west (the Elbe between the port of Hamburg on the North Sea the eastern part of Germany and the Czech Republic), focuses on the nodes (major urban hubs, ports, airports, etc..) and takes into account the environmental needs as river transport is the mode of transport lower environmental impacts.
"We therefore believe - concludes the organizations - that the development of the Elbe River, which provides a natural link between the transport of the North Sea and the Czech Republic, constitute an integral part of the European Commission in favor of inland waterways as part of its vision for a competitive and sustainable transport system. The rehabilitation of the water of the Elbe in the main TEN-T network would help to shed light on future policy for the German transport and logistics czech and stakeholders (ports, industry, owners of barges) and allows you to plan long-term investments term in the Elbe.
