    P&C stevedores has moved to secure a share of the stevedoring business by writing to major shipping lines serving Australian ports, offering "fast and efficient stevedoring services which will ring major price advantages and real competition to Australia's waterfront."
    Company chairman Don McGauchie confirmed yesterday that letters had been sent to about 30 shipping companies requesting that they strongly consider using P&C Stevedores service.

    The Western Australian opposition has repeated suggestions that the proposed private port at Oakajee, north of Geraldton will leave the state's taxpayers with a costly infrastructure bill for something that may prove to be a "white elephant".

    Following an internal review by NSW Rail Access Corporation and VicTrack into aspects of longer train running, the length of NR's Melbourne-Sydney intermodal trains were last week increased from 900 to 1300 metres.
  • TEL 'financially sound and has no debts'
    Tasman Express Line chief executive Ron Longley moved to quash rumours about his company's viability following the collapse of South Pacific Shipping.
    Mr Longley said on the day of SPS' liquidation, TEL terminated the time charters of its two vessels the Wellington Express and the Sydney express taking back their full operation.
    He added that TEL were committed to continuing the Sydney-Melbourne-South Island service in the long term.
  • Daewoo bags order from Wilhelmsen
    Wilhelmsen Lines has signed a letter of intent with Daewoo of South Korea for the construction of three ro-ro vessels, contracted for delivery in the year 2000.
    The ro-ros are of a new design developed by Wilhelmsen Lines in cooperation with Barber Marine Consultants, intended to facilitate the movement of a large volume of roll-on roll-off cargoes and cars.
    The agreement includes an option for three additional ships.
