Law of the Sea 'best balance' - Miles The UN convention on the law of the Sea is the best balance the world is likely to achieve between extending coastal state jurisdiction and preserving the navigational and other rights of the international community according to US academic and former president of the Law of the Sea Institute, Edward Miles. Senate seeks levy reactions The senate committee responsible for vetting the government's proposed legislation designed to impose a levy on all stevedores to cover the cost of wharfies' redundancy packages, is seeking submissions from interested parties including shipping lines, unions, and stevedoring companies which oppose the measure. The Senate Committee on Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport had allowed only about two weeks for submissions to be registered because it believed that all respondents had formed definitive views about the impact of the proposed legislation.
