  • Patrick creditors vote for delay
    Creditors of the four Patrick stevedore labor hire companies which employ Maritime Union of Australia members yesterday voted to adjourn their meeting for 15 days until 9 June.
    The MUA will now press ahead with its claim for the appointment of a court appointed receiver, a move which it believes would free up substantial amounts of money owed to the labor hire companies by Patrick.
  • BHP's Port Hedland expansion on track
    BHP Iron Ore's $275 million capacity expansion project at Nelson Point, Port Hedland is on track to be completed by early July.
    The final stage of the project was completed this month to raise BHP's shipping capacity from the current 63 million tonnes to 70 million tonnes annually.

    Patrick Stevedores chairman Chris Corrigan said yesterday's adjournment until June 9 of the creditors meeting served no purpose and put in jeopardy government funding for redundancies.

  • Law of the Sea 'best balance' - Miles
    The UN convention on the law of the Sea is the best balance the world is likely to achieve between extending coastal state jurisdiction and preserving the navigational and other rights of the international community according to US academic and former president of the Law of the Sea Institute, Edward Miles.
    He said a failure of the present regime was unlikely to lead to a roll-back of coastal state jurisdiction.
  • Senate seeks levy reactions
    The senate committee responsible for vetting the government's proposed legislation designed to impose a levy on all stevedores to cover the cost of wharfies' redundancy packages, is seeking submissions from interested parties including shipping lines, unions, and stevedoring companies which oppose the measure.
    The Senate Committee on Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport had allowed only about two weeks for submissions to be registered because it believed that all respondents had formed definitive views about the impact of the proposed legislation.
