    The chairman of the Asian Shipowners Forum, John Hurlstone has issued a plea to domestic and international shipping regulators and environmental lobby groups to relieve shipowners of the increasing regulatory burden on their operations.
    He said the current controls placed on ships were onerous in terms of manpower, time and maintenance of ship board and shore management systems.
  • Progress 'being made' but parties likely to miss deadline
    The Australian Industrial Relations Commission yesterday continued to chair a private conference on the rationalisation of the Stevedoring Industry Award 1991, although the parties are now unlikely to make the deadline of 30 June to finalise their discussions.

  • Second avgas tax cut comes into force
    The second phase of the government's decision to abolish Airservices Australia's component of the excise on avgas was implemented on Monday providing the general aviation sector with a potential 2.6 cents per litre saving, if its is passed on by fuel suppliers.
    Transport minister Mark Vaile said the next phase in the avgas tax reduction regime would remove the remaining 13 cents per litre paid to AA following the introduction of location specific pricing for terminal navigation services.
  • Port of Karumba dredging begins
    The Queensland government's $7 million dredging project at the port of Karumba, designed to increase channel depth to 3.4 metres to provide Pasminco Ltd with port access for its Century zinc project, will get underway next week.
    Queensland Minister for Transport and main Roads, Vaughan Johnson, said the Karumba dredging will allow for the port to accommodate the Pasminco Century project barge. The 5100-tonne barge will transport zinc concentrate from the port to 30,000 tonne mother ships up to 40 kilometres out to sea.
