MUA defends Sandra Marie role THE MARITME Union of Australia has strongly defended its role in the Sandra Marie saga, blaming Intercontinental's decision to place the vessel up for sale on the Australian Institute of Marine and Power Engineers. One of the MUA's national organisers, Mick Doleman, told DCN on Friday the manning of 11 to which the union did not agree was proposed by the institute. Uncertain future for pioneer container ship ONE of the pioneers of containerised shipping to Australia, the Discovery Bay, formerly the ACT 1, could face an ignominious end after suffering a major engine breakdown. Rising Toll claims UTO AGGRESSIVE transport group Toll Holdings is set to spread its wings further, with MIM Holdings Limited announcing on Friday it was planning to sell the freight forwarding operations of Universal Transport Operations to Toll's freight forwarding unit, Carpentaria Transport. Under the undisclosed deal, which is expected to be concluded by mid-August, Carpentaria Transport will perform all freight forwarding requirements for Mount Isa Mines in the Mount Isa region, excluding the product transported by Queensland Rail. MIM said the sale of UTO's freight forwarding operations will result in about 70 positions becoming redundant in Mount Isa, Townsville and Brisbane.
First private rail maintenance contracts near THE FIRST multi-million dollar private tendering contracts under the federal government's rail restructuring program for infrastructure maintenance of the interstate rail network are set to be signed.
