MUA backs down in Newcastle THE Maritime Union of Australia has apparently caved in and agreed to work the reefer Maunakea in Newcastle yesterday alongside workers from two other unions. The breakthrough came at prolonged hearings in the Australian Industrial Relations Commission on Monday afternoon and evening. One of the conditions of the apparent agreement was that the parties were not supposed to discuss it with the media. Money for east-west rail upgrade THE federal government has handed out is second major funding allocation from its $250 million seed fund for rail, announcing yesterday a $16 million investment for crossing loops on the interstate corridor between Adelaide and Perth. Trans-United sold to Chas Kelly Transport Tasmanian freight transport company Chas Kelly Transport has bought the assets of the Australian River Co Limited's (formerly ANL Ltd) Tasmanian land transport subsidiary, Trans-United Pty Limited, for $1.19 million. Announcing the deal yesterday, Federal Finance Minister John Fahey noted that it finalised the government's sell off of ARCL's land-based businesses. He said Chas Kelly Transport had also agreed to endeavor to offer jobs to some of Trans-United's around 40 former employees.

BMT change fails to excite Port of Brisbane Corporation's decision to take over management of the Brisbane Multimodal Terminal from Queensland Rail has evoked little enthusiasm among interstate rail freight operators. It has been confirmed the port will not renew QR's management contract at the Fisherman Island facility when it expires in October, handing back management of the port-owned terminal to the Port of Brisbane Corporation.
