    Italian state shipbuilder Fincantieri, which posted record losses in 1998, on Thursday appointed Pierfrancesco Guarguaglini as new Managing Director, replacing Saverio Di Macco, who has resigned Fincantieri, a world leader in the construction of large cruise ships, has said demand for increasingly complex vessels and its relations with a vast number of suppliers and sub- contractors had put the company under unprecedented pressure. As a result, many ships, including Disney's and now Holland America Line's, have been late.

    Evergreen Marine Corp. and China Ocean Shipping Co. (COSCO) announced plans to launch a new rout from south Africa to South America. The new service will reportedly make stops in Hong Kong, Kaohsiung, Singapore, Port Louis, Durban, Cape Town, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, and Santos.
