    South Korean navy ships escort fishing vessels in the Yellow Sea near Taeyonpyong Island in southern waters. South Korea has said it sank one North Korean gunboat and heavily damaged several others in the countries' first naval clash in the Yellow Sea since the Korean war of 1950-1953. Four North Korean patrol boats and three torpedo boats intruded into South Korean waters early on Tuesday and several began firing on a South Korean patrol boat. South Korean warships returned fire, sinking one and damaging several others. The north-south clashes are casting a pall over South Korean president Kim Dae Yung's engagement policy with the republic's northern neighbour but the government insisted that the policies should proceed consistently and continuously.

    La ministre néerlandaise du Transport Tineke Netelenbos, s'est laissée convaincre du fait que le manque d'espace qui menace le port de Rotterdam ne peut être compensé par les ports zélandais et Moerdijk. Le cabinet a en conséquence approuvé le rapport intérimaire Project Mainport Rotterdam et donne de la sorte le feu vert à l'aménagement de la Deuxième Maasvlakte. La ministre a laissé entendre que le développement se fera en phases et que la première phase de 500 ha ne pourra être entamée qu'en 2002. "Que Rotterdam commence par vérifier si tout l'espace disponible est utilisé de manière optimale", a déclaré la ministre.
