Vercors lays optical fibre link to Singapore The French cable ship Vercors has left the shores of Perth's Floreat Beach to fulfil its role in laying a $2 billion global sub-sea optical fibre cable between Perth and Singapore. The 5000km of cable laid will help Telstra to meet its obligation in an investment in a 37,000km cable linking 33 countries in South-East Asia, the Middle East and Western Europe -- or code named SEA-ME-WE 3. Telstra is one of the main investors in the $2 billon program designed to capture a share of on-line revenues estimated to be worth about $8 billion by 2001. SEA-ME-WE 3 is expected to carry commercial traffic from late this year.
Trailerail debut finally set National Rail's successful bi-modal refrigerated operation Trailerail will now begin its long-awaited inaugural Sydney to Perth train service on Friday, 19 February. Trailerail general manager Graeme Jaensch told DCN the weekly service, originally planned to start in the 1997-98 financial year, was expected to begin with a 20-trailer service ex-Sydney. He said the service would leave Sydney's Yennora terminal on Friday and arrive in Perth's Kewdale terminal on Monday, with the return trip leaving on Monday and arriving in Sydney on Thursday.

Great Northern picks up and delivers Melbourne-based locomotive and crew provider Great Northern Rail Services has set up a container park storage facility in Footscray and developed a container pick-up/delivery service for road transport companies. Great Northern recently took possession of the four-acre facility, which is located at the former Contrans terminal in Dynon Road and close to Melbourne's main docks. The facility has a gantry crane and forklift for container handling, capable of lifting 40ft loaded containers.
